I started writing
music in the early 1970's. Back then there were no synthesizers, so my
primary instruments were piano and organ. Most of the material was based
on my life style, and relationships. The music styles varied depending
on who I was playing with at that time.
I was fortunate to have played and recorded with a handful of original
artists in those years, and it was their influence that molded the type
of music I write today. All of these artists had one thing in common;
they were all story tellers.
The most memorable music has a great story that people identify with.
Along with the music, the lyrics allow the listener an insight into the
writers soul, a window to peer through and share that moment in time delivered
by the song. In many instances the listener feels as if the song was written
exclusively for his/herself.
As a song writer, I've tried to portray the moments that had a profound
impact on my life. I try to write as honestly and openly as I can, knowing
that many others have shared those experiences as well. I write about
love, loss, hope, joy and the sheer bliss of being alive. The musical
styles vary based on the stories portrayed through the lyrics.
I've adapted the music of my past, influenced by the great bands of the
60's and 70's, and for better or worse stay true to that style. Most of
the material I write capitalizes on a four piece band arrangement with
lead singing and multiple vocal harmonies.
In 1975 I suffered a spinal chord injury leaving
only the right side of my body functional. All the music I perform and
record is achieved with one hand. Certainly, I will never play as well
as I did before the accident, but with the aid of digital multi-track
recorders I can assemble my music as if I had two good hands.
I utilize synthesizers to imitate most of the acoustical instruments while
writing the material to complete the entire arrangement. This allows me
to record in the digital domain and control all aspects of the sound.
Then, if I feel a real instrument would better suit the song, I seek the
talents of other musicians. I generally use real guitars, bass and sax
on the tunes when appropriate or available. The latest CD features background
singers and some wonderful duets as well.
This is an excellent time to be a songwriter/performer. The internet has
opened the door for musicians to collaborate and record tracks from anywhere
in the world. The album Recovery has guest artists I have never met in
person. All the collaboration was done online. How cool is that!
Additionally, the cost of professionally recording your own material now
makes it possible to produce quality CD's without the need of a contract
with a record label, or their influence over the material. Artist like
myself, can now make our material available to anyone with an internet
connection.
My newest album is named "Recovery". If you would like to hear
it or learn how it was put together, use the menu at the top and click
cd-recovery or this. Singing about it
is much better than talking about it!
